Chickens, a criminal enterprise?

Last night at the City Council meeting, the subject of chickens came up.  Ten people spoke eloquently in defense of raising chickens with only one person opposed.  We are a rural community with significant agricultural interests.  Raising chickens on your property seems like a good idea and a great learning tool for our youth. So it came as quite a shock that Councilman  Bruce Dishion considers raising chickens a criminal enterprise.  The current ordinance places limits on poultry yards.  That sounds to me a lot like a commercial poultry enterprise, not a backyard with a few 4-H hens.

So my questions to our readers are:

1. Should people be allowed to raise chickens within the city limits?
2. Should there be a limit on the number of chickens you can raise?
3. Should the ordinance be amended?

This one goes out to you Councilman Dishion, Sade - Is it a crime.  P.S. Sade is back!

Criminal. Ha!

We have had our hens for about two years now. They eat table scraps and pesky bugs. Their fresh eggs are wonderful! I think everyone should have a few chickens. I love those birds!

1. Should people be allowed to raise chickens within the city limits?
Absolutely.
2. Should there be a limit on the number of chickens you can raise?
No. Obviously, good judgement should be used and the birds should not be crowded.
3. Should the ordinance be amended?
Yep.
Chickens don't bite people. They will not bark all night. They won't kill sweet little song birds. They will not run around the streets having more stray chickens!
